SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS IS HEADING HOME TO BYRON SHIRE!!!!!
SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS IS HEADING HOME TO BYRON SHIRE
Yes that’s right. Splendour In The Grass is planning to return to Byron Bay for the 2012 event.
After two years at Woodfordia in Queensland, Splendour In The Grass organisers are currently working on taking Australia’s premier winter music and arts festival back to where it all started, Belongil Fields in Byron Bay.
The dates for the 2012 event are Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July.
“Despite great efforts to have the festival at North Byron Parklands this year, we are yet to have a determination on the application.” said Splendour Co-Producer Jessica Ducrou.
“In the meantime and after much consideration we are excited at the prospect of returning to the birth place of Splendour.”
One of Australia’s premier holiday locations, Byron Bay is internationally renowned for its beautiful beaches, lush hinterland and laid back culture.
Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham has welcomed Splendour back to Byron Bay for 2012.
"Splendour's home is Byron Bay and there is defined benefit that the festival delivers to the area, especially in winter, so it is a welcome return" said Mayor Barham
“Taking the event back to Byron Bay allows us to give our audience the true Splendour experience, a quality music and arts festival combined with that distinctive Byron culture.” Ms Ducrou said.
“We'd like to thank Woodfordia and the very wonderful Bill Hauritz, Mayor Allan Sutherland and Moreton Bay Regional Council for welcoming us with open arms and hosting our event for the last two years.”

Yacht Club DJs Mostly Come At Night In A Town Near You!
Presented by Beat, Brag and Rave
Australian Tour – March/April 2012
We made it through the apocalyptic start to 2012 with no zombie sightings, but Australia’s own mash-up maestros Yacht Club DJs are about to make sure 2012 gets a dose of ’50s horror throughout March and April when they hit the road on the “They Mostly Come At Night…Mostly” tour.
Frightening both capital cities and regional towns, including Toowoomba, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Geelong, Ballarat, Hobart, Wollongong, Canberra and Newcastle, Yacht Club DJs take to the stage with their take on a B Grade Horror flick – Zombies, fake blood, plus lots of dancing and, as always, nudity. Their first national tour since 2010, Australia best be wary of what they’ve got in store.
Ballarat’s Guy Chappell-Lawrence and Gareth (Gaz) Harrison better known as the Yacht Club DJs will take their on-stage antics to the next level preparing to let night terrors loose on Australia.
Guy and Gaz - good friends from mingling at the local - found their common ground in their eclectic and diverse taste of music including pop, hardcore and hip-hop plus a little bit of Australian larrikin. Bonding over how they spent their childhood compiling long lists of songs that would get the party started, they began DJing to their friends as residents of Karova Lounge in Ballarat. But it didn’t stop there.
They’ve played parties all over Australia to more than just their friends, named on many festival bills including Meredith Music Festival, Splendour In The Grass, Parklife, Falls Festival, Field Day and Groovin’ In The Moo.
The Yacht Club DJs take on the mash-up genre and their explosive concoction of classic pop, metal, theme songs and anything in-between is a testament to their knowledge of back catalogues as well as Guy’s constant desire to forage the Internet for hidden gems to get the crowd moving.
Adding to the horror party will be the Yacht Club DJs hometown friends, Hunting Grounds. The six-piece with a rambunctious attitude, will rival the Yacht Club DJs as to who can turn the dance floor into a riot.
Hunting Grounds took out the crown of 2009 triple j Unearthed High winner and have since moved on from playing in the Ballarat High School hall to national support slots of The Living End, Children Collide and the Philly Jays. The hyperactive energy and frenetic sounds of Hunting Grounds will prepare the crowd for the ramshackle set of Yacht Club DJs.
Making it a night to dismember the Yacht Club DJs and Hunting Grounds will show the crowd howdebauchery and disruption is done. Tickets are on sale Thursday 9 February 2012.

The Fearless Vampire Killers
Batmania National Album Tour and New Single I Won’t Stay Too Long
Batmania is out now through Shock and IWSTL is available on itunes for digital download
I Won’t Stay Too Long is the next single from The Fearless Vampire Killer’s impressive debut LP, Batmania. This barefaced song encompasses the vibe of the 70’s as much as it does the sound. The retro surf-rock tune is “essentially about one night stands; being young and having flings with people just for the sake of it and in the end nothing really matters because we're in our youth and we have all the time in the world to destroy relationships and start new ones. It's the mentality of thinking you're invincible really.”
Staying true to the sound that we have come to know and love, I Won’t Stay too Long is layered with musical texture that barrels through to a powerful finish and reinforces the claims that TFVK are “one of Australia’s greatest hidden gems”.
2012 has kicked off at a cracking pace for the band. With For You & Merecently on the American TV series 90210,TFVK are beginning to make a name for themselves internationally.
The Fearless Vampire Killers will be hitting the road in March with what J Mag have dubbed a “Brilliant Monster”. Batmania explodes live, so be sure to catch them on any (or all) of the dates below.

“Find the next party these lads crash to see them in their element.”
TRIPLE J MAGAZINE
“What makes The Fearless Vampire Killers more than just tasteful recyclers, however, is not just their animal energy and ruffled charm but the inherent worth of their tunes. The songs are as strong as their influences, which is saying quite a lot.”
MESS+NOISE
“Their drugged-out take on surf-garage rock is lively and entertaining”
3.5 Stars ROLLING STONE
Live reviews
“Serving up their psychedelic rock, The Fearless Vampire Killer’s lead vocalist Sean Ainsworth was able to smash down the barrier between band and punter with his engaging presence.”
TONE DEAF
“The quartet rock a big sound and make full use of every opportunity to harmonise and unleash sweeping guitar solos.”
RAVE MAGAZINE
“They dabble in skiffle, they flirt with rockabilly, they really, really, really like Revolver era Beatles, and they sounded totally boss. A great set of tunes lifted from their latest recorded work Batmania played with conviction and just the right amount of abandon to make them feel dangerous. A Highly enjoyable addition to the bill.”

BEN SOLLEE
“This guy has it all: the singing, the playing, the songwriting. Here's hoping the world is wise enough to welcome his music with open arms.” - Silas House for No Depression
"Cellist Ben Sollee is like Andrew Bird with a little more soul, or Arthur Russell with a bit more bounce." - Lost At E Minor
"Fusing unique instrumentation with a soulful and sometimes playful voice, Ben Sollee defies convention." - World Cafe Live
Here’s something delightfully different for fans of soulful new folk music and jazzy bluegrass. Ben Sollee – classically trained cellist, wonderful folk-pop songwriter, and soulful singer blessed with a beautiful voice – is coming our way!
Kentucky-based, twenty-something Ben will visit Australia to perform a string of concerts including shows in Sydney and Melbourne in March 2012 – he’s here on the back of his most recent 2011 album, Inclusions. One of the most uniquely talented young artists in acoustic circles today, Ben plays the cello as one reviewer has stated, ‘like a rock star’; picking and bowing it so it sounds like any number of different instruments as he compliments his beautiful, soulful voice and wonderful sense of pop melody.
Ben first emerged with his inviting 2008-debut Learning to Bend. Saturated with sweeping moods and visceral maturity, Learning to Bend showcased a wild mixture of musical approaches that Ben describes as “classically influenced folk with leanings of R&B and soul.”
The album caught the ear of NPR’s Morning Edition, which heralded Sollee as one of the “Top Ten Great Unknown Artists of 2007.” No Depression put the album on their top five of 2008, Paste listed him on The Best of What's Next, and music blogs provided (and continue to provide) Ben with a steady torrent of praise and journalistic intrigue.
While people were getting their first listen of Learning to Bend, Ben was also out touring with banjo player and songstress Abigail Washburn as part of theSparrow Quartet. The ensemble, also featuring Grammy-nominated fiddler Casey Driessen and multi-Grammy winning banjoist Bela Fleck, explored the congregation of eastern and western folk music. The critically acclaimed ensemble toured throughout the world, including a US Ambassadorial tour of Tibet.
In 2010, Ben then collaborated with fellow Kentuckians Daniel Martin Moore andMy Morning Jacket front-man Jim James on the Sub Pop released Dear Companion. The album explored Ben’s desire to use musical encounters as a catalyst to inspire environmental stewardship.
In addition to his activist work in regards to Mountain Top Removal coal mining (a cause recently taken up by Emmylou Harris as well), Ben is also known to go on bicycle tours - he cycles from town to town - to bring attention to his country's over-reliance on the motor vehicle (a theme also reflected in the wonderful 'Bury Me In My Car').
Make sure you catch this young acoustic folk artist on the rise - especially for fans of Jose Gonzales, Avett Bros and Band of Horses. Ben Sollee is just as capable of whipping an audience into a frenzy as he is stilling a room with stunned awe and respect. See you front and centre!

CASS MCCOMBS
Mistletone and Triple R proudly present -- for the first time in Australia! -- Cass McCombs with his five piece band at The Corner in just two weeks time, on Friday February 17th, with very special guests The Orbweavers and Wintercoats. We are thrilled beyond measure that Cass will finally be visiting our shores, after releasing six acclaimed and much loved albums -- most recently, the gently optimistic Humor Risk and one of the stars of last year’s best-of lists, the dark, chamber music-inspired Wit’s End, which featured the song hailed by many as the best of 2011 (and our fave of the year), County Line.Folk balladeer without peer, Cass McCombs is a true craftsman of lyrical storytelling. His songs are poetic and haunting, whimsical and playful, and offer a rare, tangible experience of the bittersweet. Prepare for an inspiring evening in the company of one of America’s most formidable contemporary songwriters. Tickets are on sale now from The Corner Box office, tel. 9427 9198 or online here: https://corner.ticketscout.com.au/gigs/296-cass-mccombs-Cass McCombs was born in 1977 and raised in Northern California. He is of the generation that grew up hearing the stories still fresh on people’s minds: Zodiac killings, Zebra killings, Manson, Black Panthers, SLA, riots, People’s Park, LSD, etc. These were the local legends and became the basis for Cass’s imagination. He is a child of the ’70s.
Cass lived many years drifting the U.S. before ever attempting to make music seriously, and learned from this experience to listen to people’s stories from many walks of life. Instead of university, this was his education: working as a janitor, in a horse stable, a book shop; as a soda jerk, truck driver, movie projectionist; he worked construction in New Jersey, and at a midtown NYC delicatessen. Cass developed his narrative songwriting style, and since has always expressed himself through the use of characters.
He writes stories for his friends using their humour, their language, with detail and color, relating their drug use to classical literary themes, for instance. Rather than fulfilling the stereotype of the confessional singer-songwriter, he describes the lifestyles and feelings of those that surround him, with more love than judgment.Cass has always refused to speak his influences, except for American folk music and The Beatles. He is a folk artist, telling the stories of his native land in a modern tongue.
Deeply distrustful of “The Business”, Cass has stayed relatively underground, supported by a devoted fan base and his label/publisher. In 2010, Domino Records hired a photo-surveillance private investigator to follow Cass and take what would become the publicity shots for Wit’s End. Examples such as this suggest that he and mainstream acceptance are in a state of perpetual stalemate.
However, in contrast to his persona, Cass’s music is generous, the melodies always infectious, the production and musicianship first-rate. And at the forefront of his craft are always the lyrics, which more than any songwriter today propels the avant-garde. He presents morally ambiguous situations for the listener, allowing them to interpret however they choose.
Humor Risk (out now on Domino Records) is his sixth-and-a-half record, the second of two albums Cass released in 2011. The first was Wit’s End, which featured the tragic song County Line, named by Pitchfork as their number 8 best song of 2011.
Musically, Humor Risk is more rhythm-based, and with a heavier lyricism, than its sparse predecessor. Both were compiled from recordings made over the course of three years, in various places such as New York City, New Jersey, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles and mixed in a single session and divided into albums.
This follows the way Cass works; he writes continuously, not for any album in mind, and then puts them into themed groups. And this is why Australian audiences are in for such a rare treat when this "unobtrusively brilliant" (to quote John Peel) artist finally lands on our shores.
"An extraordinary display of songwriting prowess… another casually monumental achievement from one of the great singer-songwriters of the day" - Q (four stars)
"One of America’s most unique and affecting songwriters" - UNCUT (four stars)
"A genuine twenty-first century maverick" - MOJO (four stars)
“Suffering rarely has sounded so comforting” - SPIN

Alongside debut performances at Bluesfest, McMorrow will set out on an east coast run with stops in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. No novice to the stage, James has already captured audiences throughout Europe and USA with his passionate, pop oriented folk, including the UK where his spot on last year’s Glastonbury lineup had many new fans witness his magic. ZULU WINTER
London’s scholarly five piece Zulu Winter have been charming the ears off live audiences and critics alike, already being hailed as one of the most exciting acts to come out of Britain after only a handful of shows. Their unique brand of tribal pop has landed them a spot on a hoard of European festivals, a huge UK and European tour supporting Foster The People before they cement their name in tastemakers brains at SXSW in March. Check out all the hype:
‘Music that shimmers like a sky full of fireworks, we give it a year before enormodromes of voices are bellowing their epic choruses right back at them’
NME
‘Celestial guitar pop with a macabre edge, they shine a light on eerie, shimmering art pop’
The Fly
‘As statements of intent go, their debut single might as well be holding up a sign at the side of the road asking for a lift to Glasto’s Pyramid Stage’
Q Magazine
‘Feet moving indie grooves destined to fill festival tents’
Q Magazine
‘A stealth like hit of the year, their charms captivate’
- Loud & Quiet
‘Carving a slither of a niche between tribal pop and post - Coldplay rock’
The Guardian – New Band of the Day
'Zulu Winter are set to take their tribal pop on to a bigger playing field’
Fake DIY
They have spent the past year locked up in seclusion creating and recording with their highly anticipated debut album due out later this year. A taste of what’s to come can be found in their new single ‘We Should Be Swimming’ which Zane Lowe dubbed “Hottest Record In The World” earlier this month. Stream the track below.

Fun is what happens when three extraordinarily talented musicians come together to create something altogether new and wonderful. The trio melds a stunning array of diverse inspirations – spanning Broadway to The Beach Boys, into an irresistible collection of freewheeling pop song craft.

KRYSTLE WARREN
to captivate our hearts and minds once again FROM RECENT ACCLAIMED PRODUCTION WAY TO BLUE:
“The deep, smoky, boundless voice of Paris-based soul singer Krystle Warren was the revelation of the show. She breathed a heart-stopping I Was Made to Love Magic unaccompanied, and earthed many a pitch-perfect harmony chorus.”
The Age
“Krystle Warren… you should really give her a listen. You won’t believe what you’re hearing – she’s amazing.”
K.D. Lang
“Warren's voice is an extraordinary instrument, murmuring with tenderness at times, growling with intensity at others. It vividly recalls Nina Simone in its depth and smokiness, as well as John Martyn and (Jeff) Buckley in terms of virtuosic variety.”
The Guardian
For immediate release – The enigmatic and gifted folk-jazz-soul singer and songwriter Krystle Warren – one of the revelatory highlights of the recent concert event “Way to Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake” is returning to Australia very soon to wow audiences all over again.
Existing Australian fans and newer converts alike can catch Krystle in March 2012 at her own headline shows (as well as the support for folk-blues troubadour Eric Bibb). Krystle will perform at the Blue Mountains Music Festival, Port Fairy Festival, MossVale Music Festival, and the Brunswick Music Festival.
Krystle Warren burst upon English audiences with a show-stealing performance on the Jools Holland Later program in October 2009, around the same time she was receiving serious plaudits from Rufus Wainwright and kd lang. She repeated the trick at the Barbican’s Jazz Voice concert in the London Jazz Festival; “Songs of Grace and Danger – The Songs of John Martyn” curated by Danny Thompson.
She’s also now an honorary member of the extended Wainwright/McGarrigle/Thompson clan having played at Kate McGarrigle tribute shows in London and New York; and of course the Nick Drake “Way To Blue” posse with shows across the UK, Italy and very recently Australia. Last summer she featured alongside Rufus Wainwright and Kylie at the third annual Watermill Center Concert in the Hamptons – and she recently supported Joan As Police Woman on her UK tour.
Music critics instantly “get” Krystle too: As The Independent said, “There are elements of Nina Simone and Joan Armatrading in folk-jazz singer Krystle Warren's voice, and even Dusty at her dustiest.” While our own SMH said following the Way To Blue Sydney Opera House performance: “However, it was Warren, with a voice that has some of the character of Nina Simone and the buoyancy of a young Aretha Franklin, who regularly stilled the room.”
There’s just something alluringly familiar about Krystle Warren. She instantly sounds classic, like a highly-regarded veteran .Much of her strength is down to the assured quality of her voice, which sashays elegantly among the hidden corridors linking jazz, blues, folk, funk and pop without a trace of self-consciousness and has you instinctively grasping for elusive comparisons.Tracy Chapman, Nina Simone, Joan Armatrading, Norah Jones,Madeleine Peyroux and Erykah Badu spring lazily to mind, but Warren really does have a distinctively forthright style of her own.
Originally from Kansas City, she served her apprenticeship busking in New York and Paris. Her original songs and soulful, husky singing brought her to the attention of the Paris-based Because label, home to Manu Chao and Amadou and Mariam, resulting in the release of her debut album Circles. “We are certainly in the presence of a mighty talent”, attested Colin Irwin of the BBC at the time.
Uncut Magazine echoed the sentiment saying: “Warren’s thrilling debut fully lives up to expectations….It’s all uncontrived and near faultless, really.”
‘LOVE SONGS. A Time You May Embrace’ is the title of the new CD from Krystle Warren & the Faculty available in Australia February via Planet/MGM Distribution.
Australian audiences are in for a real treat – let yourself be swept away by the intelligent, captivating, and wholly remarkable sound of Krystle Warren.

International folk-blues master of songcraft,
is returning to his Australian fans.“Bibb possesses a warmly expressive voice and a fine sense of phrasing. He shines, too, as a guitarist with a quiet and confident approach” – Downbeat Magazine
“Eric Bibb’s performance at the three day London Guitar Festival at Queen Elizabeth Hall, was rich in soulful intensity” – Clive Davis, The Times London
“Bibb’s breezy, poetic blues makes for an intimate show, and his smooth laid-back style is enhanced with some neat guitar licks from Staffan Astner” – Guitar and Bass Magazine
A performance by Eric Bibb is an enriching experience – both musically and spiritually. Purveying a beautifully realised and deftly accomplished, soulful and gospel infused, folk- blues, Eric has no problem melding a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle contemporary sensibility. As one critic wrote “Eric’s singing and versatile guitar playing fuses a variety of genres to become a New World Blues”.
In duo mode for Eric will be accompanied by beautiful Swedish guitaristStaffan Astner, who is also featured on the live CD Troubadour Live! Eric performs with matchless ease and a poet's sensibility. He has criss-crossed the world paying his dues and absorbing musical influences, picking up countless awards and nominations, and mesmerising audiences along the way. Eric Bibb serves up some powerful tunes – aimed as much at the brain as well as the heart and soul.
"Eric is one of the new, young singers that has appeared on the scene that, much to my delight, has a great voice, is an excellent performer and has a great knowledge about the roots of this music" – Taj Mahal
Eric’s new CD “Deeper In the Well” is due for release in Australia in March.

"In the last year, on an unprecedented scale - individuals stood up and called for their voices and rights to be respected. It makes sense to mark 50 years of Amnesty International with a re-working of Bob Dylan's most stirring, challenging and pivotal songs that marked years of unrest and affirmed the relevance of people power." Edwyn Shiell, Amnesty International Australia spokesman
Released today, Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honouring 50 Years of Amnesty International, features a stellar and diverse group of artists across the generational and musical spectrum. This very special release celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning and life-saving human rights activism of Amnesty International. Fittingly, this milestone coincides with the 50th anniversary of the1962 debut album release from the unparalleled Bob Dylan.
Listeners will be delighted to find the likes of and Elvis Costello, My Chemical Romance, Maroon 5, Jeff Beck, Seal and Miley Cyrus united together, side by side, on the amazing track listing. The assortment of musical genres involved attests to Amnesty’s depth of support in the music community, the universal appeal of the core message of human rights, and the breadth of Dylan’s impact on culture.
Through Chimes of Freedom, Amnesty International (who has more than three million supporters in 150 countries) seeks to enlist support for its fight against censorship and attacks on free speech – whether involving artists, writers, musicians, political activists or bloggers. In this campaign, Amnesty is fighting for people such as the imprisoned Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiaobo in China, a scholar and human rights defender imprisoned since 2009 for writing about corruption and criticizing China’s political system.
Chimes of Freedom is Executive Produced by legendary music executive Jeff Ayeroff and Julie Yannatta, who spearheaded Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur – a 2007 collection of John Lennon solo compositions performed by major artists including U2, Green Day, and R.E.M.
"This album is a powerful fusion of the music community’s respect for Amnesty’s life-affirming work and for Bob Dylan’s enduring brilliance,” said Ayeroff and Yannatta. “We are proud to have worked with Amnesty to produce this remarkable project.”
Pre-orders and streaming of the album is available via Amnesty’ International Australia’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AmnestyOz?sk=app_190322544333196
This impressive collection is released physically today (Friday February 3) through Fontana International, a Universal Music company.
